Back in the 90's I built an Autotune Gemini and liked several cars that were available then.
What happened to the Nelson 350 which was based on the Rover SDI.
I also liked the AF sports but both these cars dont come up for sale.
Also at the time there was at least 10 three wheeler kits too.

Further proving the quality of the Aristocat, Autotune joined the SMMT early on in the evolvement of the car, completing most of the criteria required by the current SVA testing back in 1992. TUV (UK) Ltd., on behalf of the SMMT, tested the Aristocat from all aspects. Specifications: Built & registered in 1989 and correctly recorded as ‘Autotune’ on the V5C. Recently passed an MOT – valid until June 2018. Previously raced with success in the 750 Motor Club's Kit-car Championship - believed to be the Gemini that won the large engined class two years in a row: 1990 & '91.

Can I add the Sculptural Engineering Larini that later became the GTM Balista. Lotus elise styling with Golf mk2 mechanicals and a sandwich composite structure monocoque with front and rear frames. Nearly bought one in 1999 but went for a Fury instead. SE also toyed with a sandwich structure seven chassis that did not see the light of day as far as I know.

It's not clear to me from your post, but presumably you know that the Gemini is still available. I'm building one.

Hi Yes I know the Gemini is a good car and the Taylors a fine family.
A couple of years ago I was at Brands at the invite of my Porsche racing daughter and Bill Batty's old racing V8 Gemini was there and brought back memories as he took me round Combe in it in 96.
My Gemini met its end with me driving in a head on and I elected not to buy back from the insurance company, though the car rebuild was started by someone who got in touch.
I have just completed a sevenesque special and have 2 Quantum 2+2's, conclusion is that I am completely mad.
No my point is the cars that have sunk without much notice.

I may be wrong but I think Lotus jumped on that one PDQ.

Interesting, not heard of that before. I went down and met with the two brothers that designed it, looked a decent kit and pretty well engineered (they were boatbuilders so knew their composites). I think gtm re-engineered it somewhat and the price rose significantly to the point where iirc the balista was similar in price to a pukka elise.

As for all the other kits that used to be available that have disappeared without trace, I think they mostly disappeared in the late 90s and early 00s. We've had a few long threads on here bemoaning their demise and the lack of variety in today's market. The reasons are many and various, but boil down to Sevens (or similar) working because they're not too expensive and you get something more focussed than the mainstream can offer and then the more expensive stuff - think Cobra, Stratos, Ultima etc, works because you can't get anything like that form the mainstream without spending A LOT more money, but the in-betweeny stuff doesn't really make sense in the face of the competition from the likes of the Elise, MX5 and whatever else you can think of from the mainstream market.
I didn't pay much attention to the kit car scene between the mid 90s and early 00s and I was genuinely shocked to see that some of the (I had thought) mainstays of the industry were no more and that there was a proliferation of sevenesque cars around. Particularly surprising to me was Quantum, who had abandoned their Fiesta based cars and were then (and now) producing their Xtreme - a stainless steel seven.
The AF Sports was a lovely thing, but I'm not sure they ever sold very many.

Here is a few more of the better designs that only sold a hand full but deserved better imo.
Raffo belva - focus/mondeo rear mid engine with vague stratos styling cues - was on my short list when I bought the fury
Dax kamala - futuristic looks but apparently well engineered and handles well
Gregori gpr - escort mk3 based, not bad looking, forerunner to the gtm libra ish
Ykc raider - mad hot rod type car, looked good fun
Edge devil - single seater formula type car with audi mid engine /transaxle. Always thought this would work well with an auto union d type body and an audi v8 in the back.

Sorry for resurrecting a very old thread, but just wanted to say - the people you saw running that V8 Gemini were my dad and his mate, who co-own and run that car to this day. It's actually just had an engine rebuild, as the Rover v8 kept dropping oil and getting black-flagged for smoke. We spent Saturday afternoon getting it turned over on the driveway. It's still completely mad.

Having driven it myself, I can testify that most track days are spent trying to keep the rear wheels from overtaking the fronts (and being overtaken at ever bend because of it), and then overtaking just about everything on the straights at comically low revs. It's a very strange car, full of character and extremely crude! We'll hopefully be running it at track days and hillclimbs fairly regularly from this summer, look out for us (you'll hear it before you see it!).

My own experience with big Rover V8's in very light chassis has been very similar. The straights are doddle the curves are the killers! Good to see someone really enjoying their kit car good luck to you!

I too was at Combe on that day in 96. I was there with a friend who had a Dutton and he let me drive it which set me off on my kit car journey.
On the Day Bill Batty was giving rides and as my friend had bought a Gemini to build, the Taylors got him a ride in it. When he came back he bought me a trip out with Bill.
He pulled out and asked for the thumbs up after one lap and then dropped the hammer. He was chasing down a Ferrari and was all over it in a couple of laps, both he and the Ferrari both got faster and faster not giving an inch. Eventually he came in with me and a grin from ear to ear on both of us. He apologised that he had not got past and had been forced to come in as we were running out of fuel.
A spectacular package, especially for the day and a very good driver.

what car is that? Gemini or Falcon Mk2
Monday 18th April 2011
could somebody be so kind and identify the below car?
Monday 18th April 2011
Tuesday 19th April 2011
Does look very similar to the Gemini, but the back end looks slightly different (tho' could just be the picture). I believe the Gemini was developed from the Elva? Would guess it's one of the above.
Tuesday 19th April 2011
i have all these pictrues form the gemini´s already.
so my hope was that somebody could find out anything by the number-plate, as my search at the dvla database did not turn out with a result.
Tuesday 19th April 2011
My guess would be that it's a Gemini. The number plate definitely suggests Mk 2 Escort donor. Perhaps you could contact Autotune to see if they know the car?
Thursday 21st April 2011
dvla database does not come up with 'Ford' for this number-plate. may i ask how you know that the reg. belongs to a ford?
Thursday 21st April 2011
I don't 'know' that the reg. belongs to a Ford. I did check the DVLA site myself and also found nothing.
I did say that it 'suggests' a mk 2 Escort purely as the P suffix would have been first registered between August 1975 and July 1976, just after the mk 2 was launched.
From the little research I did on the Falcon, I believe that it would be a much earlier car - 1960's?
Although IIRC, it was possible in those days to re-register your car with the suffix that was current at that time.
As I said, it was just a guess ..
Friday 22nd April 2011
oh..ok. my fault.
is there another possibility , besides autotune (i contacted them today by email about that matter), to get any infos about that car? Falcon register?
the squarish cut-outs for the sidelampos and inidcator rather indicates its a gemini, but on a gemini this area sticks out from the body, whereas on the picture its flush.
the headlamp area is moulded for headlamp covers, which i havent seen before on an original-gemini.
Saturday 23rd April 2011
Auto Trader suggests it's a Gemini:
https://www.vehiclecheck.co.uk/VehicleCheck2/secur..
Monday 25th April 2011
It's a Gemini. The humped rear wheel arches give it away.
Sunday 1st May 2011
Autotune replied!!!!
'The photo that you sent is of an original Falcon body that was used on the Gemini prototype built in the 1980's. It has since been replaced with a production Gemini shell and the car is still owned and occasionally raced by us.'
Monday 2nd May 2011
I have actually been driven in that car back in the early nineties before deciding to build my own Gemini using a Dolly Sprint lump which I enjoyed for a while but sadly dinged it down in Totnes Devon.
The Taylors who are Autotune are lovely people and their son does research into little known cars, so you could not have gone to a better place to find your answer.
Monday 9th May 2011
How did I miss this thread? I'm building a Gemini to go racing in 750MC RGB - albeit at a glacial pace:
http://timsmnr.blogspot.com
It's a shame that the Gemini didn't retain the lip for the headlamp covers - oh well.
Monday 9th May 2011
hi tim,
we already had contact.i sent you some pictures of the built from my gemini..
i think there are not many gemini´s around, so its quite rare to find somebody involved in those kits.
designwise its a good alternative to a fisher or sylva fury i think!!
Monday 9th May 2011
Hi A.G.,
Yes - I realised once I'd replied. You are right about their rarity - and I find it slightly strange myself. For example, the difference between the Gemini body and the GRP I've seen on Furies is night-and-day (I understand that the new owner of the Fury project is sorting this out.) I personally prefer the traditional 5-link rear to the Sylva live-axle solution too.
I met Richard and Carolyn Taylor at the Stoneleigh Show last weekend. They seem like great people to deal with. Richard put up with plenty of my unusual questions. He doesn't know it yet but I may have a chat with him to see if he fancies doing some sort of arrive-and-drive package on the car mentioned in his e-mail for a race later in the season.
I'm going to be starting spending on my machine again soon however so looking forward to making progress, or at least accumulating some 'stuff' for the build.

Kit Car Manufacturers

i still cant say which is my favourite at the moment..my gemini or my sylva..the gemini drives not so 'spectacular' as my sylva.i mean the gemeini behaves more like a 'road-car' than a kitcar.
i´m quite happy with the sylva solution of the live-axle and i would not say that the traditional one is better.i prefer the sylva one..ok..my gemini is about 150kg heavier as my sylva as it has more trim, a windsceeen, the sylva has a lightweight race-body so the fibreglass is ultra-thin, speedster screen, bare aluminium inside, shorter diff, engine slightly more powerfull.. therefore i guess the driving exprience is totally differnt
